Spring Mills Primary opened its doors in 2011. There are approximately 425 students currently enrolled in kindergarten through second-grade.
This “green school,” which has an environmentally-friendly mission, is the first new building in West Virginia to receive LEED Gold Certification. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.
Some of its green features are a geothermal heating and cooling system, enhanced insulation, and natural day-lighting which enables the building to use 33% less energy. Thirty percent less water is used due to reduced-flow kitchen equipment, waterless urinals, and motion activated sink faucets. The primary school has a kitchen waste pulping system and decomposing unit that reduces the amount of food waste taken to landfills by 78%. The school building and community is used to teach an environmentally focused curriculum. The curriculum topics include energy, recycling, composting, water, gardening, healthy atmospheres, wildlife & nature, and outdoor adventures.
